I remember having a conversation with a colleague once and I said to her that God loves her and wants to have a relationship with her. The idea of God loving her and wanting to have a relationship with her sounded bizarre and far-fetched. She looked at me stunned; she couldn’t come to terms with my statement.

But it is true and that is what being a Christian is all about; having a loving relationship with the Creator of the universe. That is why God sent His only Son Jesus Christ to the world – He died for our sins and rose from the dead on the third day. ‘For this is how God loved the world: He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life’ John 3 v. 16.

Becoming a Christian starts by acknowledging we are sinners and recognising that we are helpless. We must realise how deeply our sins grieve God’s heart and how desperately we need saving. ‘For everyone has sinned; we all fall short of God’s glorious standard’ Romans 3 v. 23. No one of us can make ourselves right with God by being a better person. This means that we need help; we need a Rescuer, a Saviour.

The penalty for sin had to be paid for, for us to be made right with God. Jesus Christ paid the full price for the sin of all mankind. He did this by giving His life on a cross. His death and resurrection paved the way for everyone to have a personal relationship with God.

‘For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life through Christ Jesus our Lord’ Romans 6 v. 23. Becoming a Christian is a gift from God to mankind through Jesus Christ. Like any other gift, this gift of salvation (becoming a Christian) must be accepted to be meaningful to us.

Becoming a Christian involves the following commitment:

  • Acknowledge that we are sinners and in desperate need of a Saviour, Jesus Christ i.e. to turn away from our sins
  • Believe in our heart that God raised Jesus Christ from the dead i.e. to trust that Jesus paid the full penalty for our sins
  • Confess Jesus as Lord and Saviour i.e. surrender our lives totally to Him
  • Receive Jesus as our Saviour i.e. accept the gift God is offering.

‘If you openly declare that Jesus is Lord and believe in your heart that God raised Him from the dead, you will be saved. For it is by believing in your heart that you are made right with God, and it is by openly declaring your faith that you are saved’ Romans 10 vv. 9 & 10.

If you would like to receive Jesus as your Lord and Saviour, then talk to Him in your heart. You can pray like this:

‘Lord Jesus, I know that I am a sinner, undeserving of Your love. But I believe You died and rose on the third day. I completely trust You for my salvation. Jesus, come into my life, forgive my sins, cleanse me, save me, and take control of my life’.
